Burst Pipe? Do This Now

1) Turn off the water (first thing).
Shut off the main water supply at the meter (usually in the front yard). This stops the flooding and limits damage fast.

2) Switch off power if water is near electricity.
If water has reached power points, appliances, lights, or the switchboard area, turn off the power at the main switch.

3) Open a few taps.
Turn on a couple of cold taps (shower, sink etc.) to relieve pressure and help drain leftover water from the pipes.

4) Contain the water.
Grab towels/buckets and mop up to protect floors, cupboards, and skirting boards. If it’s safe, move items out of the wet area.

5) Call Prolific Plumbing!
We’ll find the burst pipe, isolate the issue, repair the pipe, and check what caused it so you’re not dealing with the same drama again. 🔧

Know Where Your Unit’s Water Shut-Off Valve Is
(Before an Emergency)

In a unit, the shut-off point is usually one of these spots (from most common to “hunt mode”)

Under the kitchen sink

Look for a small tap/valve on the cold-water line (often a little lever or round handle). This can isolate the unit’s internal cold supply in many apartments.

Laundry cupboard / near the washing machine taps

A lot of units have their main internal isolation here, especially if the laundry is central.

Hot water unit cupboard (if you have one inside the unit)

If your hot water system is in a cupboard/balcony enclosure, there may be an isolation valve there for the unit.

Bathroom vanity or behind the toilet

You’ll often find individual isolation valves under the basin and behind/next to the toilet. These won’t shut the whole unit off, but they can stop the immediate flooding.

In the hallway/linen cupboard or an access panel

Some buildings hide the unit’s main isolation behind a small access door/panel inside the unit.

On the balcony in a services cupboard

Newer apartments often have a small “services” box with the isolation valves and sometimes the water meter.

How to Prevent Burst Pipes

Burst pipes commonly happen when the weather gets colder. We always recommended checking your pipes or letting an expert examine it for you to detect deteriorating pipes before it bursts.

Here are preventive measures you can do during the cold weather:
1. Know your water supply system. Be familiar with where you can find the main stopcock so you can easily switch off the water supply when needed.
2. Keep your home as warm as possible.
3. Keep in mind where the tap valve so you can switch it off easily.

In case the pipes burst:
1. Turn off the main valve and other taps.
2. Block the water coming out of the pipe with a towel or other thick cloth available.
3. Call Prolific Plumbing repair service to assist you.
