Backflow Prevention & Testing (RPZ / RPZD)

Backflow prevention is a key responsibility for both homeowners and businesses, and it’s not something you want to leave to chance. At Prolific Plumbing, we’ve been servicing St George and the Sutherland Shire for over 10 years, helping property owners stay compliant and protect the local drinking water supply.

We regularly work across Oatley, Penshurst, Hurstville, Connells Point and surrounding suburbs, providing backflow hazard assessments, device installation, servicing and annual testing.

Property owners are responsible for ensuring any potentially harmful contaminants can’t enter the drinking water system through cross-connections, irrigation, commercial equipment or other on-site plumbing setups. In many cases, backflow devices require annual testing and a compliance certificate/report, especially for commercial sites and strata-managed properties.

Prolific Plumbing is fully licensed to assess your site’s risk, recommend the correct backflow prevention method, carry out the required testing, and provide the documentation you need—keeping your property safe, compliant, and hassle-free.

Matthew came to our house today to investigate a loud noise when we turn our tap on and had the problem fixed within 10 minutes. He was efficient and professional and even advised us on some other issues he recommends we get fixed to avoid further issues. I was very happy with the service and will definitely be recommending Prolific Plumbing.

Discovered our hot water system was broken at 7am this morning. Prolific were on the scene in just a few hours. The new unit was switched on just before 2:30pm the same day. The kids never knew it had been replaced. Price was competitive. Trustworthy and professional team. Highly recommended.

Matthew was fantastic, came out on a Sunday night to fix a burst pipe. He clearly talked through the process and explained the quote. His work was great quality and got the water back on for us quickly with no fuss. Saved the day!

Why backflow prevention matters!

Backflow prevention protects public health, your staff/customers, and your business compliance.
If a device fails, you may not notice anything day-to-day… until an audit notice lands, or worse, contamination risk becomes real.
The fix is usually simple: correct device selection, correct install location, and proper testing on schedule.

We provide a fast, reliable and efficient service backflow prevention and testing. To find out more about RPZD, please Contact us anytime!

Do I need an rpzd?

In Sydney, you typically need an RPZD (Reduced Pressure Zone Device) when the risk is classed as high hazard — meaning there’s a realistic chance something harmful could be sucked or pushed back into the drinking water supply (health risk, not just “dirty water”). Sydney Water states high hazard properties must have a registered break tank, RPZD, or registered air gap installed.
A few common scenarios:

1. Handheld bidet hoses / trigger sprays (NSW)
NSW guidance says a high hazard device such as an RPZD must be installed for handheld bidet hoses and trigger sprays (and certain bidet seats if they don’t have compliant integral protection).

2. Construction sites
Sydney Water requires a backflow device on construction/reno water main connections, and notes that building more than a single standalone house is treated as a high backflow hazard.

3. If the site’s hazard rating is unknown / not assessed
If you don’t know or don’t get it assessed, they’ll assume high hazard, which triggers the same requirement (break tank / RPZD / air gap).

4. Any setup with higher-risk cross connections, like alternative water supplies
(e.g., stormwater/greywater) connected to plumbing — these can fall into high hazard.

Backflow prevention for businesses & strata

If you manage a café, medical suite, childcare, gym, strata building, car wash, irrigation-heavy site, or any property with specialist equipment, backflow prevention is one of those “boring” items that saves you from very un-boring problems later.

Testing is ongoing! High and medium hazard devices must be tested on installation and every year, and results lodged within 2 days.

Backflow Device Installation & Backflow Prevention

At Prolific Plumbing, we provide backflow device installation and backflow prevention services for homes, strata and businesses across St George and the Sutherland Shire. Our process starts with a proper backflow hazard assessment, carried out in line with the Backflow Prevention Standard. This assessment identifies the level of risk on the property and determines whether the site is classed as low, medium or high hazard for potentially contaminating the drinking water supply.

Backflow occurs when water flows the wrong way through pipework and can allow water from a property—sometimes containing contaminants—to enter the potable (drinking) water system. This can happen through back-siphonage (a drop in mains pressure) or back-pressure (where another system pushes water back). Either way, the concern is the same: protecting water quality and public health.

Backflow prevention devices are designed to stop that reverse flow. Depending on the risk level and the type of connection, protection may be provided by a device that allows water to flow in one direction only, or by separation methods such as a break tank or an air gap. The correct device must be selected for the hazard rating and installed in the right location to do its job effectively.

Property owners and business operators are responsible for ensuring the correct backflow protection is in place and kept in working order. In many cases, testable backflow devices also require regular testing and certification (often annually) to remain compliant. Prolific Plumbing can assess your site, install the appropriate device, test it as required, and provide the documentation you need for your records and compliance.
