Back Flow Prevention & Testing

Our process starts with a proper backflow hazard assessment, carried out in line with the Backflow Prevention Standard. This assessment identifies the level of risk on the property and determines whether the site is classed as low, medium or high hazard for potentially contaminating the drinking water supply.

Backflow occurs when water flows the wrong way through pipework and can allow water from a property—sometimes containing contaminants—to enter the potable (drinking) water system. This can happen through back-siphonage (a drop in mains pressure) or back-pressure (where another system pushes water back). Either way, the concern is the same: protecting water quality and public health.

Backflow prevention devices are designed to stop that reverse flow. Depending on the risk level and the type of connection, protection may be provided by a device that allows water to flow in one direction only, or by separation methods such as a break tank or an air gap. The correct device must be selected for the hazard rating and installed in the right location to do its job effectively.

Property owners and business operators are responsible for ensuring the correct backflow protection is in place and kept in working order. In many cases, testable backflow devices also require regular testing and certification (often annually) to remain compliant.
